Scotland’s national bard was born in Alloway, Ayrshire in 1759 and made his name with a book of poetry published in Kilmarnock in 1786. As well as writing his own considerable body of work , he was an important collector and arranger of traditional poems and songs of both Highland and Lowland Scotland.

Marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, the newly established Centre for Robert Burns Studies at the University of Glasgow is hosting a three-day conference from 15 to 17 January celebrating all aspects of Burns's life and works.
Robert Burns 1759-2009 includes seven plenary presentations from major academics and seminar papers from over 60 additional scholars, academics and Burns' enthusiasts. Subjects include Music, Bawdry, Translation, America and Europe, to highlight only a few. This academic schedule boasts an ambitious partnership with Scots language publisher Itchy Coo Educati

Honouring the influence of Robert Burns on Scottish Music and his importance in preserving the traditions of his own cultural background, the Celtic Connections festival (15th – 31st January) celebrates his legacy with their biggest event to date - Auld Lang Syne at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall Auditorium, which will feature an array of renowned artists in a fitting tribute to the great bard.

Over at The Old Fruitmarket the Jamaican Burns Night with Sly & Robbie and Edward II, a multicultural feast of music, dance, poetry and food will salute the spirit of Burns with a programme inspired by music from the West Indies.

A GLASGOW businessman has taken the first steps towards bringing back river traffic to the Clyde.
Gerry Ferguson has launched a luxury yacht, Helen of Glasgow, and is set to offer private and corporate charters from its city base.
It is the first new vessel to offer cruises on the river since the Pride O' The Clyde waterbus was sold to the company which operates boats on Loch Katrine.
The only other service on the Clyde - which once teemed with boats of all sizes - is Seaforce, a powerboat company with its base beside the Tall Ship.

Mr Ferguson said: "I lived beside the Clyde and every morning I used to look out and think there should be more boats on the river.
"I had the idea and it has blossomed and launching the boat is like a dream. It's something I have always wanted to do.
"Every other city in the world that has a major river running through it makes the most of that fact. We just don't use it properly."
He said he named the 65ft cabin cruiser after his mother and that it will be based at the pontoon next to the Glasgow Science centre.
It will take clients on luxury trips in the waters of the west coast, including to golf resorts on the Firth of Clyde like Troon and Turnberry.
Mr Ferguson's company, Clyde Executive Charters, employs boat skippers and crew members, including fully-trained chefs.
The vessel is capable of 25 knots and has presentation and communication facilities for corporate parties.
He added: "Whether you wish to treat loved ones to a trip they'll never forget, reward some of your top staff or entertain key clients, Helen of Glasgow offers the ultimate in hospitality.
"You can berth at secluded destinations for a leisurely lunch, sample a sip of whisky or perhaps take in a round of golf on some of the best courses in the world."
A day-long charter on the vessel will cost £3000 and a weekly charter £18,000.
Champagne lunch packages at the quayside are available at £89.95.

Bluegrass and traditional Chinese music might not seem the most natural of bedfellows, but they and many other styles find perfect harmony in the sublimely gifted hands of Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet. Singer and banjo player Washburn – last seen at Celtic Connections with all-girl string band Uncle Earl will be joined by banjo legend Béla Fleck, fiddle adventurer Casey Driessen and roots/classical cellist Ben Sollee. The Sparrow Quartet not only transcend musical boundaries between Appalachia and China, but draw on influences as diverse as jazz, classical and 60s pop.

Bringing together two undisputed giants of New Orleans music, this mouth-watering double bill encapsulates over half a century of the Big Easy’s rich cultural history.
Appearing tonight with his longtime band The Lower 911, Dr John recently released what’s been widely greeted as his finest album in 20 years, City That Care Forgot, a brilliantly seething stew of swamp blues, voodoo funk and searing soul, eloquently fuelled by outrage at New Orleans’ continuing post-Katrina plight.
Although better known as a hugely influential hitmaker for other artists – including Lee Dorsey, Otis Redding, Bonnie Raitt and our own Frankie Miller, among umpteen others – Allen Toussaint makes a rare live appearance here singing his own material, accompanied by the peerless piano-playing learned from his legendary mentor, Professor Longhair. When asked by a well-known publication, back in 1999, to nominate his favourite songs of the last millennium, Richard Thompson took this request rather literally. While his list never made it into print, it did inspire this unique, unanimously acclaimed musical history-lesson, originally performed at LA’s Getty Museum in 2000, and subsequently released on CD and DVD.
Thompson’s brilliantly idiosyncratic survey of songcraft leads audiences on a journey from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, taking in medieval ballads, Jacobean opera and Victorian music-hall before sampling modern songwriters as diverse as the Beatles, Squeeze, Prince and Abba.
Spanning the centuries with Thompson’s trademark bone-dry wit and astounding guitar mastery, the show features accompaniment from Judith Owen (vocals, piano) and Debra Dobkin (percussion, vocals).
Only Thompson, surely, could successfully tackle such a daunting, dizzying diversity of songs, simultaneously capturing their individual essence and minting them afresh, all the while making them unmistakably his own. (Sunday Herald)

Robert Burns never went to Jamaica – but he would have done, if the 1786 Kilmarnock Edition of his poems, published to pay for his one-way passage, hadn’t become a bestseller. In tribute to this turning-point in his career, and the many themes his work shares with Jamaican music, we celebrate this 250th Burns Night with a unique mini-carnival of Scottish and reggae sounds.
Arriving direct from Kingston are Sly & Robbie, the legendary rhythm/production team who’ve presided over Jamaican music since 1975, and their Taxi Gang band. Alongside lovers-rock artist Bitty McLean, whose new album Movin’ On they’ve just produced, the Riddim Twins’ guests include Edwyn Collins and Karine Polwart, performing specially-created versions of classic Burns songs. The night’s musical curator, Sushil K Dade, will host more Celtic/Caribbean crossover with his all-star Future Pilot Dub Orchestra, while newly-reformed folk/reggae pioneers Edward II and the Calypso Steel Band complete the bill, with Jamaican food also included in the ticket price.

GLASGOW has been named the best place to shop outside London's West End for the fourth time in a row - and experts predict the city will still be top of the shops in 10 years.
The city centre came second again in the 2008 Retail Ranking and is officially the best place to splash some cash in Scotland.
The figures are reached by considering the number of shoppers, the size of the city's retail space, the number of major chains, comparison stores and quality independent retailers.
The data, released by economic forecasting consultant Experian Business Strategies, predicts a total of £2.3billion will have been spent in the city by the end of the year - a rise of £4million on last year's figures.
The planned expansion of Buchanan Galleries and the revamp of the St Enoch Centre means that Glasgow should retain its title until at least 2018.
Despite the credit crunch, takings are also predicted to rise by 2%, unlike in London's West End, where income is expected to drop by 9%.
It proves the city centre is still able to attract hordes of shoppers - despite competition from out-of-town centres such as Silverburn.
The centre, which marks its first anniversary this week, was mentioned in the report for leaping the most places in the rankings.
It has risen from the 1047th best place to shop in the UK in 2007, when it was undergoing its transformation from the old Pollok Centre, to 311th.
Richard Low, director of Combined Property Services, the developers of Silverburn, said: "We are delighted to have jumped 736 places."
The only other Scottish destination in the top 10, Edinburgh, ranks at number eight. However, the capital is predicted to have dropped to 10th position in 10 years.
Councillor Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "It's great to see Glasgow is still recognised as a vibrant place for citizens and tourists alike."

Glasgow's Art Gallery and Museum, an imposing red sandstoned building, first opened in 1901.
In 2003 Glasgow City Council embarked on a three year, £27.9 million restoration project to return Kelvingrove's magnificent Victorian interior to its original splendour. The museum re-opened to an enthusiastic public in July 2006.



The increased exhibition space now accommodates over 8,000 objects including several new exhibits such as the fully restored Spitfire LA198 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron.
Kelvingrove also houses a superb collection of paintings by (among others) Botticelli, Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh & Picasso.

Kelvingrove Museum Near Argyll Hotel is Honoured with Oscar Award

GLASGOW'S favourite museum has picked up an honour at a global awards ceremony.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum was nominated among building projects from Britain, Europe and Australia at the final of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors awards.
The A-listed building beat off 74 competitors in the building conservation category to win a commended award.
RICS Scotland director Graeme Hartley said: "The judges were impressed by the scale and care taken to successfully deliver a very demanding project.
"As a category A-listed building, the team had to be careful to safeguard and enhance the building whilst bringing it into the 21st century.
"The number of visitors endorses the success of the project."
Regarded as the Oscars' of the built and natural world, the awards recognise commitment to building conservation.
Liz Cameron, chairwoman of Culture and Sport Glasgow, said she was thrilled the project had been recognised at the ceremony at London's Millennium Mayfair Hotel.

WORLD famous singer and musician Adnan Sami is returning to the UK after three long years.
He will be performing in London with his full live orchestra at the Wembley Arena on 18 and 19 October, at the Nottingham Arena on the 11 October and at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow on 14 October.
Bollywood icon Adnan, who shot to fame with his debut album, Kabhi to Nazar Milao, says his hands are full with a number of projects.
"I am doing a track with Pandit Jasraj. He will be singing one of my romantic fusions of Vikram Bhatt's film 1920. Shubha Mudgal and Parveen Sultana will also feature in the album and I'm also working with Jermaine Jackson on a music album. It will blend different music styles from pop, rap and techno to Indian and Arabian styles of music."
In the last couple of years he has lost about 130 kg of weight and no doubt there were lots of speculation about his inspiration. However, he says it's his parents who motivated him. "My dad once told me – No father would like to attend his son's funeral and so please don't do this to me. These words were enough to jolt me," he says when asked for his motivation to lose weight.
Adnan is one of the most talented musicians to come out of the UK, with the huge success of his musical videos, performed together with such iconic stars including Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerjee to name a few, Adnan has reached extreme heights of accomplishment.
As an accomplished concert pianist and composer, his career has ranged from classical to jazz and to modern pop-rock - western and Indian.
He graduated from the University of London and developed his musical style and technique on the piano and thus evolving a new sound which he pioneered and ultimately introduced to the world, becoming the first person to play Indian Classical music on the electric piano.
The famous American magazine, Keyboard declared him the 'Keyboard Discovery of the 90s' after reviewing a piano solo performance Adnan had given on Channel 4 in the UK.
Adnan is also popularly referred to as the fastest keyboard player in the world, this observation was first made by Swedish Radio and Television Broadcasting.
Adnan was featured in a documentary commissioned by the Foreign and Common Wealth Office of Great Britain as being amongst the ten most famous names from the sub-continent of India and Pakistan, who have influenced the Asian culture in the UK over the last 50 years.
He has also won many international awards including MTV's 'Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award' in 2001, the 'Nigar Award', 'Bolan Academy Award' and the 'Graduate Award.'
As a recording artist, stage and television performer, Adnan Sami Khan, at the age of 34 has worked in various parts of the world including USA, London, Sweden, Spain, Pakistan and India. His vocal albums have consistently been big sellers, each album, crossing the million mark in sales. His energy on stage as well as the music videos is a delight for audiences and viewers of all ages.
For his UK tour Adnan Sami will be accompanied by co-artists such as Monali Thakur a singer who rose to popularity around the world after placing ninth in Indian Idol 2, the Indian version of Pop Idol.
Javed Ali' is an Indian playback singer. He has been singing in Hindi movies from 2000 but shot to fame in 2007 when he sang the song Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein from the movie Naqaab and thereafter another hit like Jashn-E-Bahaara from the movie Jodhaa Akbar, whose music is directed by A R Rahman.
Hot item girl Rachna Maurya who popped many eyes with her raunchy acts in songs like ‘Deedar De’ (Dus) and music videos of Himesh Reshammiya and Rahul Sharma. The item girl gave us more than we bargained for once again. This time it was at Sukhbir’s ‘Tere Naal Nachna’ music launch. Rachana Maurya is an Indian girl who is known for her sexy dance moves in music videos.
The show will also host eight other professional Bollywood dancers who will be dazzling the audience with their fantastic dances. Furthermore, the King of comedy V.I.P , who participates in comedy circus will be humouring the audience with his comedy through out the show.

Glasgow Space Congress Sets Record (2 October)More space professionals from across the world than ever before gathered in Glasgow this week for a ground-breaking conference on the future of space technology and space travel. The International Astronautical Congress (IAC) held at the SECC was the 59th in the history of the Congress - and set a new record for attendance. There were more than 2,000 delegates - including representatives form the space agencies of America, Russia, China, Canada, Japan and Europe - compared to the previous record high of 1200.
Organiser John Harlow, President of the British Interplanetary Society, described the IAC 2008 as a “tremendous success”. “The hard work has really paid off and we are delighted that a record number of people have enjoyed a Congress that has exceeded all our expectations,” he said. “Glasgow has been a great host city and many of our delegates have commented on the friendly hospitality they have received.”
Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “It has been a privilege to watch events unfold at the SECC this week - GCMB has been streaming some of the Congress proceedings live on seeglasgow.com. The people of Glasgow have responded magnificently to this opportunity to impress space experts from around the globe with their warmth, wit and, above all, curiosity. And, of course, there’s still a day to go, so I would encourage Glaswegians everywhere to take advantage of the free exhibition and lectures by astronauts in the Congress’s final hours.”

A major exhibition celebrating the TV series Doctor Who will come to Scotland for the first time next year.
The show will feature many of the props and costumes from the most recent series, including the Doctor's famous transport, the Tardis.
A fee will be levied, but has not yet been set by Culture and Sport Glasgow.
The exhibition, which will be staged in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum from next March until the end of 2009, is currently on in London and Cardiff.
Doctor Who's adversaries - the Daleks, Cybermen and Autons - will form part of the show, alongside other creatures such as Slitheen, Oods and the ever-faithful K9.
In addition, props will be added once the episodes they appear in have been broadcast.
'Next generation'
It will be the latest high-profile exhibition to come to Kelvingrove, since it reopened two years ago following a £35m renovation.
Kylie: The Exhibition, which was a free event, attracted more than 165,000 visitors in just four months.
Bailie Liz Cameron, the chair of Culture and Sport Glasgow, said: "I am sure Doctor Who will inspire the next generation of visitors to Glasgow Museums.
"Our ambition to maintain Kelvingrove's position as Scotland's number one visitor attraction remains a priority as we enjoy unrivalled success.
"Because it is the only Scottish destination for the Doctor Who exhibition, we look forward to welcoming visitors to Kelvingrove from all over Scotland and beyond."
