Jimmy Carr: Joke Technician Glasgow 18/29 March

Jimmy Carr: Joke Technician

Jimmy Carr is not just a TV star. He’s won awards, released chart-topping DVDs (there’s a new one out this November), written a best-selling book and broken box office records by performing to over 500,000 people in the last three years. He may be the hardest working man in comedy. But perhaps he wouldn’t have to be if he had a little bit more talent.
This show is exactly the same as last year’s except every single word. It’s rude, crude and offensive but those aren’t the only reasons you’ll enjoy it.
Always one of the hottest tickets at the Magners Glasgow International Comedy Festival and not to be missed, unless it’s not your kind of thing.

Quidam - Cirque Du Soleil Glasgow

Quidam - Cirque Du Soleil 16 april to 19 april 2009

Stay at The Argyll Hotel 0141 337 3313

September, 2008 – Critically celebrated entertainment group Cirque Du Soleil is to stage a UK arena tour of the breathtaking production Quidam. This spellbinding masterpiece hits the UK for the first time with a series of exclusive shows in Liverpool, Belfast, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, Dublin, Sheffield and Glasgow.
Directed by the unique and inspirational Franco Dragone, Quidam has toured the world for the past 13 years to wide-spread acclaim and has enjoyed sell-out success across the world in Europe, the US, Australia, Japan, Canada and New Zealand performing to over 8 million fans. America’s TIME Magazine says “Beyond Circus, beyond theatre…makes the incredible visible” whilst Australia’s The Age is equal in its praise stating “We are surely seeing the world's best performers”.
The show follows the sell-out success of Delirium which toured the UK last year. In contrast to Delirium which was a multimedia musical production, Quidam is classic Cirque du Soleil at its very best – usually presented under the big top setting and now for the first time ever in arenas. With more than 50 performers from 14 countries, Quidam is fêted for bringing the impossible to life. The show is a thrilling combination of gravity defying acrobats, awe-inspiring aerial acts, contortionists, rope-jumpers, a balancing duo and of course the acclaimed crazy clowns. Technical expertise and extravagant design are woven together by a dramatic emotional thread where hope and beauty come to life.
In Quidam, the ensemble weaves a narrative of a young girl's adventures in an alternate universe into their surreal, death-defying performance. The show has a unique relevance for a big city audience with one of the key themes exploring the loneliness and isolation of the individual in a world where people are busy, rushing by, caught up in their own personal dramas.
Quick Quidam Facts
Quidam, pronounced "key-dam," is a Latin word for an anonymous passerby, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner, a person rushing past, living lost amidst the crowd.
Quidam follows a young girl in a world of nameless faces, lost in an anonymous society. Frustrated with her little world she embarks on a journey and meets mysterious characters who seduce her with the marvellous, the unsettling and the terrifying.
Quidam showcases approximately 250 costumes, 500 costume accessories and 200 shoes. The average age of the cast is 28: the oldest artist is 52, and the youngest is 12.

Business travel slump hit Holiday Inn parent- The Scotsman (18 February)

Holiday Inn owners Inter-Continental hotels, the world’s largest hotelier, warned a slump in fourth-quarter bookings had continued into 2009 with “no sign of improvement” on the horizon. The UK-based hotels firm said that worldwide revenues per available room (revpar) was down by 12.2 per cent in January. The decline was led by cutbacks in business travel and a steep fall in demand in the Asia-Pacific region. Inter-Continental have recently embarked on a $1bn refurbishment programme for their Holiday Inn brand. 21 UK establishments have been improved under the programme, as the group look to build on custom in the growing mid-market.

Glasgow even more competitive in 2009

In response to the current economic climate, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau has unveiled a value-added initiative from leading city hotels that will make Glasgow an even more attractive and competitive destination for conferences. Under the new initiative, major hotels will provide new residential conferences with a range of incentives including a free traditional ‘Burns Supper’ course to mark the year of Homecoming, a free drink for each delegate and free accommodation for the partners of delegates.
Furthermore, the decrease in the value of Sterling against the Dollar and the Euro means that Glasgow is now around 25% cheaper for US and European buyers than it was two years ago.
Molly Doheny, Head of the Convention Bureau at Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “Conferences are extremely important to Glasgow and this package of value-added measures demonstrates the willingness across the city’s hotel community to keep Glasgow competitive. Our ‘Team Glasgow’ approach will stand us in very good stead in the current climate

More Cash for city arts would help Scotland - Evening Times (17 February)

Pauline McNeil, Labour’s culture spokesman, has claimed that additional funding for Glasgow’s galleries and museums would allow greater public access and even wider international interest. Ms. McNeil has written to Culture Minister Mike Russell asking him to detail the criteria applied by the Scottish Government to determine national status. She said: “I have consistently argued this case and believe the time has come for there to be a thorough assessment of the funding arrangements for Glasgow. Given the value for money Glasgow has been able to provide attracting the largest visitor numbers outwith London, you can see any additional funding will be well spent.” Currently, Edinburgh’s National Galleries and Museums receive £41 million of Government funding, while the likes of Kelvingrove and the Burrell collection receive nothing.

Homecoming bank notes

Homecoming bank notes

New banknotes have been designed by Clydesdale Bank to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns and the Year of Homecoming 2009.
The new family of banknotes celebrates famous Scots and the five World Heritage Sites in Scotland, drawing on the Homecoming themes of Burns, Great Minds and Innovation, Culture and Heritage.
The new designs are:
£5 Sir Alexander Fleming and St Kilda
£10 Robert Burns and The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh
£20 Robert the Bruce and New Lanark
£50 Elsie Inglis and The Antonine Wall
£100 Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Heart of Neolithic Orkney

First Minister Alex Salmond said:

"The Clydesdale Bank's commemorative notes are a wonderful contribution to the Homecoming celebrations. The new designs showcase our unrivalled landmarks and landscapes as well as the contributions of some of Scotland's greatest minds. "Clydesdale is currently the largest supplier of banknotes in Scotland and has been producing notes since 1838.
"Scotland has produced our own banknotes for over 300 years, marking the culture, heritage, tradition and resilience of Scotland, its people and our financial sector. Clydesdale Bank's launch of a new banknote family is an indication of its strength and commitment to Scotland in the current economic climate.
"Homecoming is a key part of the Scottish Government's six point economic recovery plan, and will assist our tourism industry through the current downturn. There are now more than 300 events planned across Scotland which we are promoting to millions of people worldwide.
"Homecoming 2009 is shaping up to be the biggest celebration of Scotland yet and our great contributions to the world. We are confident it will be a year to remember and that we will meet our target to generate an additional £40 million in tourism revenue.
"And of course I am delighted to see the iconic image of Burns has been presented in the most widely used £10 note in recognition of our national bard's 250th anniversary. I would like to thank Clydesdale Bank for these new designs. These commemorative notes will be in circulation, worldwide, forever - I cannot think of a greater start to our year of celebrations nor a better, lasting legacy for Homecoming 2009."
David Thorburn, Chief Operating Officer of Clydesdale Bank, said:
"Clydesdale Bank's new banknote family showcases the best of Scotland - its people and its heritage. We are the largest note issuer in Scotland and I am delighted that we are introducing such an innovative and striking set of notes during the Homecoming. I am particularly pleased that a new portrait of Robert Burns will feature on one of our most popular notes - a fitting tribute in the 250th Anniversary of the year that he was born."

PARLIAMENT LAUNCHES OFFICIAL TARTAN COMPETITION

PARLIAMENT LAUNCHES OFFICIAL TARTAN COMPETITION
A tartan competition has been announced at Holyrood by Presiding Officer Alex Fergusson MSP. Joined by two fashion textile students, Jill Kirkham and Kirsty Robertson from Cardonald College, the Presiding Officer has launched a competition to design an official Scottish Parliament tartan as part of the events marking 2009 as the 10th anniversary of devolution.
Announcing the launch of the competition, the Presiding Officer said: “As part of our activities to mark a decade of devolution we are launching a competition to design an official Scottish Parliament tartan. Tartan is not only an internationally recognised symbol of our country, but the tartan industry also makes a significant contribution to Scotland's economy. The competition will use the talent of Scotland’s design students to generate a unique tartan which I hope both MSPs and members of the public will enjoy wearing in the years to come.”
The competition is open to all current textile and design students studying at thirteen Further and Higher Education establishments across Scotland. Students are invited to enter their tartan design by the closing date of January 30. Judging will be carried out in March, and the production of the cloth will be completed in time for the Presiding Officer to wear at the 10th anniversary event on 1 July 2009.
The winning design will be exclusively used by the Scottish Parliament for items sold in the Parliament shop and for marketing and publicity. The new tartan will be registered with the new Scottish Tartans Register as “the official Scottish Parliament tartan”.
The winning entrant will receive a length of the finished tartan and an invitation to the 1 July event. Both the winning entrant and two runners-up will be offered paid industry work placement opportunities.

First Minister's Message For Home Comming

The Homecoming 2009 initiative - with its 300-plus inspirational events across the country - will help Scotland turn a threatened tourism downturn into a visitor boom, First Minister Alex Salmond says in a special New Year message released today.
The video message was recorded at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh, which is hosting Zig-Zag - Paths of Robert Burns' exhibition until February before it is taken on tour round Scotland for the rest of 2009.
It begins with a view of the original manuscript of Auld Lang Syne, and Mr Salmond saying:
"Written by our very own international cultural icon Robert Burns, Auld Lang Syne is a masterpiece that is sung by hundreds of millions of people around the world to welcome each and every New Year. "As we know, New Year is a time for family, for reunions, for taking stock, for looking back and looking forward. "For many people, 2009 will be an enormous challenge, with the full impact of the economic downturn starting to bite.
"At times like this, therefore, it is even more important that we pull together as a nation. The economic storm clouds are gathering. But I know that we will weather this storm - and emerge even stronger, and well placed to prosper. "That is why we are delivering our economic recovery plan to help families and business - accelerating investment in the economy, and boosting spending on fighting fuel poverty.
"It means more money to support families struggling to pay their mortgage. And it means £70 million available this coming year for local authorities to freeze the unfair Council Tax - putting much needed extra money in people's pockets.
"We need to ensure Scotland becomes a more successful country, mitigating the downturn and leading the recovery. "As we enter a new year, a wonderful opportunity presents itself to turn a threatened tourism downturn into a visitor boom. "Homecoming Scotland - the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns - will be a marvellous celebration of all things Scottish: Burns himself, golf, whisky, our proud heritage and Scottish scientific advance and achievement.
"More than 300 inspirational events will take place throughout the country and across the year complementing the vast range of world class attractions already offered in Scotland. "From the world's biggest Clan Gathering in Edinburgh to the Burns-inspired Celtic Connections programme in Glasgow, the Open Championship at Turnberry to the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, there's something special for everyone. "Homecoming is a chance for Scotland's international family, and all who feel an affinity for our nation, to come back and reconnect with our heritage while also learning what being a citizen in Scotland in the 21st century actually means. "I believe there is a spirit of optimism abroad that will pull us through the hard times, that will see Scotland take her rightful place in the world, and right now will encourage people to return to Scotland for our Year of Homecoming. Or, as Rabbie would have put it: 'For a' that, an' a' that, It's comin yet for a' that, That Man to Man the warld o'er, Shall brithers be for a' that.' "So get behind Homecoming and make 2009 a year to remember, for Auld Lang Syne, and for Scotland."

MSP's battle for body of Mary, Queen of Scots

NATIONALIST MSP Christine Grahame is leading a campaign to repatriate the body of Mary, Queen of Scots, from Westminster Abbey.
The South of Scotland MSP is to lodge a motion in Parliament calling for the monarch's remains to be buried in Scotland. She will also write to culture minister Linda Fabiani, urging the Scottish Government to support her campaign, which is already being backed by the composer James MacMillan, along with historians and the Catholic Church in Scotland.
Mary, who was born at Linlithgow Palace, fled to England after she was forced to abdicate in 1567. She was held prisoner by her cousin Elizabeth I, found guilty of treason, and executed at Fotheringhay Castle in Northamptonshire 20 years later. She was initially buried at Peterborough Cathedral, but her body was exhumed in 1612 when her son, King James I of England and VI of Scotland, ordered that she be reinterred at Westminster Abbey. Grahame said she believed Mary should be buried at Falkland Palace in Fife, where her father died shortly after she was born. She said: "She was an iconic historical Scots figure and ultimately the victim of English plotting. Given the House of Stuart's association with Falkland Palace, a place where Mary is believed to have spent her happiest days, that would appear to be an appropriate place to inter her remains." The campaign also has the backing of Hugh O'Donnell, the Liberal Democrat MSP.Alan MacInnes, professor of history at Strathclyde University, agreed Mary's final resting place should be at Falkland Palace. He said: "She shouldn't be in England under any circumstances.

Axe falls at historic city hotel

Axe falls at historic city hotel – The Evening Times (3 February)A search has begun to find a buyer for a historic Glasgow hotel which has played host to VIPs from Winston Churchill to Frank Sinatra. The 222 room Quality Hotel at Central Station has closed down after its owners went into administration. The A-listed building on the corner of Gordon Street and Hope Street is one of five hotels which have shut after the collapse of the Real Hotel Group. Scott Taylor, chief executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said: “It is a great shame to see this grand old lady of Scotland’s hotel industry close its doors. The Central hotel is held in great affection by visitors and Glaswegians alike, many of who will have their own private memories of special occasions celebrated there. Unfortunately, the group that owns the hotel has been issuing profit warnings and it was only a matter of time before the Central announcement.”
