Barry Humphries' Last Night Of The Poms near the Argyll Hotel Glasgow

Barry Humphries' Last Night Of The Poms
Dame Edna Everage has been one of the most idolised and admired women in show business for many a year.
Famed for her catchphrases such as “Hello Possums” and “Call Me Old Fashioned”, Dame Edna soon became TV’s most loved housewife. Still in 2009 she holds this regard amongst the worlds public, and has become the face of leading make-up brand M.A.C. Cosmetics. From sell out world tours to hit TV shows, there is no denying Dame Edna is a natural born star!
Sharing the bill with the glamorous Dame Edna Everage is Australia’s Number One Cultural Supremo Sir Les Patterson. Sir Les is a politician by trade and has had many important and influential roles for his native country, these have included Chairman of the Australian Cheese Board, Minister Of The Yarts (arts) and Minister for Sport with special responsibility to keep sports rampantly heterosexual and "blokey".
Sir Les will once again be performing Peter And The Shark, a parody on Prokofiev’s Peter And The Wolf. This time in a different guise, Peter is a bronzed surfer played on a piccolo trumpet, his friend is now a laughing kookaburra played on a soprano saxophone, and the duck has become a duck-billed platypus whose pleasant theme is played on the bassoon!
Carl Davis CBE has composed all of the music, and will be conducting the orchestras that will be the back-drop to all of Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson’s performances. Carl Davis CBE is a world-renowned composer and conductor, he believes that all music has an important place in the world, and this is reflected in the diversification of his concert programming. He has worked on numerous film and TV scores, that included Chaplin’s ‘Mutuals’ (12 short films), released numerous best selling CD’s and DVD’s, as well as composing and conducting music for special events such as the 150th anniversary of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, where he worked with Sir Paul McCartney to write ‘Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio’.
Carl Davis CBE…
“This unique collaboration between myself and Barry Humphries was written as a parody on the Proms. Barry and I have waited 28 years to do this concert again, Dame Edna and Sir Les never disappoint.”
Accompanying Carl throughout the tour will be some of the UK’s finest orchestras with a 60 piece choir.
Carl Davis’ compositions will be performed by The Orchestra of the Scottish Opera, The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ulster Orchestra.
Promoter Harvey Goldsmith CBE said this about the tour…

'I was there' - The Story of The Glasgow Apollo

I was there' - The Story of The Glasgow Apollo
Near the Argyll Hotel Glasgow 0141 3373313
“I Was There” is a Rock Musical with difference. Throughout the course of the production, the audience is led on a magical journey telling the story of not only one band or artist – it tells the story of the best rock bands ever to take to the stage, it features the best rock songs ever and the central character is not a singer or a guitarist – it is the famous Glasgow Apollo, the best rock venue in the world.
‘I Was There’ transports you back in time and gives you a fast paced show stretching from 1973 to 1985. 12 years of powerful music that influenced many of the bands of today. From Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Rolling stones, Frank Zappa, to Blondie, The Clash, The Jam and many more.
It chronicles the passion that people had and still have for the Apollo theatre and describes the heartbreak of what it’s like to lose a big piece of your youth and your culture when it closed its doors in 1985. This will be the first time the "Glasgow Choir" have got together for over 23 years and they will be out to prove they are still the noisiest and craziest audience ever. Experience what the Glasgow Apollo meant to the thousands of people who went faithfully to the biggest auditorium of its kind in Europe.
The story is about music, the building and most of all the people who went there. Their personal experiences, stories, anecdotes and tales are woven into the script along with a set list of songs that will represent the best music to be played at The Apollo during that time.

Glasgow’s Galleries are more popular but Edinburgh’s get all the cash – The Evening Times (27 January)

Continuing their week long feature into whether Glasgow is receiving sufficient economic support from the Scottish Government, The Evening Times turns to Glasgow’s galleries and museums.
Despite attracting more visitors, Glasgow’s attractions receive around £500,000 a year from a Government fund, meanwhile Edinburgh’s attractions have access to more than £41 million.
Bailie Liz Cameron chairwoman of Culture and Sport Glasgow (and vice-chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau) said: “All we’re asking for is recognition that Glasgow’s cultural estate brings added value to Scotland’s economy. It is simply perverse cities such as Leeds, Bradford, Liverpool and Manchester receive tens of millions of pounds in national funding for a handful of museums, while Glasgow, with its 13 museums, receives not a single penny.
“Times are tough and the public purse is tight, but Glasgow should be applauded for continuing to invest so heavily.”
Jurys ‘in’ on Glasgow conference industry – Conference News (22 January) Glasgow’s conference business received a boost with news that Jurys Inns are planning a new hotel next to the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC). The 230 room hotel will create an estimated 75 new jobs and is scheduled to open in 2010. The company says it hopes to capitalise on the 3.24m annual UK and overseas visitors to the Glasgow area who spend £800m in the visitor economy each year.
Chief executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Scott Taylor, says: “Jurys’ latest development represents Glasgow’s continuing growth in new hotels, and is one of 12 proposed new hotel developments that are committed to the city.
“The meetings industry can feel confident that Glasgow has both the capacity and the quality to deliver mega events and conferences as well as boutique solutions for meeting organizers.”
£5m hotel to get the go-ahead on prime city centre site – The Evening Times (27 January) A £5million hotel is to be built on a “ugly” gap site in Glasgow city centre. City councillors were today expected to give the go-ahead to the 11 storey building in Jamacia Street. The hotel will have up to 115 bedrooms and expected to cost between £5m and £6m. Building will begin early next year.
City gets £1m share of cash to boost building – The Evening Times (27 January)Glasgow is to share in a £17million Government hand-out for the construction industry. Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon unveiled the cash boost for credit crunch-hit house builders across Scotland. The Scottish Federation of Housing Associations says Glasgow needs 2000 new homes.
Glasgow weekend break – Plymouth Herald (21 January) The Plymouth Herald looks at the best way to spend a weekend in Glasgow. Highlights featured include shopping in Princes Square, visiting the Glasgow School of Art, dining at Gamba and strutting your stuff at the Garage.

Rhod Gilbert & The Award Winning Mince Pie

Rhod Gilbert & The Award Winning Mince Pie
IF. COMEDY NOMINEE 2008
TIME OUT ‘COMIC OF THE YEAR’ WINNER 2008
STAR OF LIVE AT THE APOLLO & THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE
Since his Perrier Newcomer nominated debut show - 'Rhod Gilbert’s 1984', Rhod has been haunted by critics describing him as a serial fantasist of ex-prime ministerial proportions.
This year, Rhod decided to abandon his fictional tales of Llanbobl, and try living in the real world for once. 'Rhod Gilbert & The Award-Winning Mince Pie' begins in a service station, at about 2.40am.
Armed with a travel pillow, a flask and a very powerful torch, Rhod aggressively demands to know more about the 'Award-Winning Mince Pie' on display on the counter. Suddenly aware of what he is doing, he is forced to acknowledge that he may be having a very mild nervous breakdown.
How did it come to this? He doesn’t even like Mince Pies. The pressures of living in a tedious, pointless and absurd world surrounded by idiots have finally taken their toll. Perhaps he should never have left his fantasy world of Llanbobl in the first place. This is the slightly ridiculous story of how one Mince Pie broke the camel’s back.
'Face-achingly funny…the audience were genuinely weeping with laughter' ***** Daily Record
'Gilbert has finally surpassed all expectations…exhilarating stand-up, sublime storytelling' ***** Scotsman
'A virtuoso performance. Every moment is exhilarating, passionate and sparklingly funny' ***** Chortle
'Gilbert’s performance is powerhouse and this show is his best yet' ***** Metro
'Comedy manna from heaven' ***** Independent

Director appointed to build on Glasgow’s City of Music status

The woman who runs Glasgow's concert halls is to be the first director of the body that will build on its newly-designated status as a Unesco City of Music.
Louise Mitchell, currently director of Glasgow's Concert Halls, will assume the new position in May.
Last year the city became an officially designated centre of music after being granted the honour by the cultural wing of the UN.
In her current position she runs the organisation that manages the Celtic Connections festival and venues such as the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow City Halls and the Old Fruitmarket.
Her new position will be director of GUCM (Glasgow Unesco City of Music), and a full launch of the new organisation will be announced shortly.
Ms Mitchell said: "My years at Glasgow's Concert Halls have been a great time personally for me - developing the venues and audiences and seeing events like Celtic Connections flourish; and it was a great privilege to work on the redevelopment of the City Hall's and Old Fruitmarket.
"I have an outstanding team of colleagues who I am very sorry to leave, but I look forward to this opportunity to work even more widely in Glasgow's music scene and make the most of the fantastic opportunities Glasgow Unesco City of Music can offer."
Colin McClatchie, the chair of Glasgow Unesco City of Music, said: "We are delighted to welcome a director of the experience and standing of Louise Mitchell to lead Glasgow Unesco City of Music in its first years.
"She has just the qualities we need: clear artistic vision and a track record of working through partnerships, balancing aspiration and commercial realities to realise it.
"Louise's long experience in music locally, nationally and internationally makes her the ideal leader."
