New banknotes have been designed by Clydesdale Bank to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns and the Year of Homecoming 2009.
The new family of banknotes celebrates famous Scots and the five World Heritage Sites in Scotland, drawing on the Homecoming themes of Burns, Great Minds and Innovation, Culture and Heritage.
The new designs are:
£5 Sir Alexander Fleming and St Kilda
£10 Robert Burns and The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh
£20 Robert the Bruce and New Lanark
£50 Elsie Inglis and The Antonine Wall
£100 Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Heart of Neolithic Orkney
First Minister Alex Salmond said:
"The Clydesdale Bank's commemorative notes are a wonderful contribution to the Homecoming celebrations. The new designs showcase our unrivalled landmarks and landscapes as well as the contributions of some of Scotland's greatest minds. "Clydesdale is currently the largest supplier of banknotes in Scotland and has been producing notes since 1838.
"Scotland has produced our own banknotes for over 300 years, marking the culture, heritage, tradition and resilience of Scotland, its people and our financial sector. Clydesdale Bank's launch of a new banknote family is an indication of its strength and commitment to Scotland in the current economic climate.
"Homecoming is a key part of the Scottish Government's six point economic recovery plan, and will assist our tourism industry through the current downturn. There are now more than 300 events planned across Scotland which we are promoting to millions of people worldwide.
"Homecoming 2009 is shaping up to be the biggest celebration of Scotland yet and our great contributions to the world. We are confident it will be a year to remember and that we will meet our target to generate an additional £40 million in tourism revenue.
"And of course I am delighted to see the iconic image of Burns has been presented in the most widely used £10 note in recognition of our national bard's 250th anniversary. I would like to thank Clydesdale Bank for these new designs. These commemorative notes will be in circulation, worldwide, forever - I cannot think of a greater start to our year of celebrations nor a better, lasting legacy for Homecoming 2009."
